About me
Why Urban Edits?
Why “Urban,” I’m often asked. Living in many different cities has given me a fascination with all things urban, an interest I pursued through my Masters. That makes me well-placed to work within the subject areas of urban sociology and geography, architecture, construction and property development.
The breadth of my experience, however, opens up other possible topics. I have edited articles on finance, economics and corporate news; education and schools. I have worked on corporate yearbooks, grants for not-for-profits, and doctoral theses and Masters dissertations.
I’ve been drawn to language and words all my life. I spent my childhood summers in Houston, Texas, moving from the library to the pool. Then, I spun that reading background into a publishing career, when, after spending a university year in Madrid, I worked at small magazine about business in Mexico.
Since then, I’ve lived in Santiago, Chile; Hamburg, Germany; Singapore; and now London. In those cities, I have worked as a finance journalist and bureau chief for a wire service; a technical writer for the oil services and property development industries; and a writer and editor for an architecture magazine. In London I studied for a Masters in Urban Studies, which reacquainted me with academic writing.
Writing for a new audience or editing someone else’s work is not unlike assimilating to a new country: you have to listen, make sense of many messages, interpret, and have an eye for detail.
I’m comfortable with a wide range of writing styles. I am a quick study who can tune into the right voice, tone and style for the intended audience. I have an instinct for unintended inaccuracies and an eye for punctuation and spelling mistakes.
To round out the picture, I hold an MSc in Urban Studies from University College London (UCL) and a BA in History from Rice University, Houston. I am also a member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders.
